in a tube or on steel wheels, lasalle needs a métro extension, resident says

As Gazette colleague Henry Aubin notes, the opening up of bids for the Montreal métro-car contract may lead to the use of steel wheels (instead of rubber) in our subway. That, in turn, could make it easier and cheaper to expand the system because expensive tunnels wouldn't be required.

We also wouldn't need a long tube running through LaSalle.

Via a Facebook page, LaSalle resident Patrick Asch has been pushing for an extension of the Green Line that would run through his city on a right-of-way once used by trains. (The map on the right shows part of the right-of-way). Asch even has five stations planned on his Google map, and suggests the line could eventually be extended to Lachine, Dorval and even Trudeau Airport. Because today's métro rubber tires can't be used outside, he suggested the extension be built in a long tube, as is done in some cities. That would avoid the high cost of tunneling. If steel wheels are used, the tube wouldn't be needed.
